Mural is a Collaboration Between Local Artist Brad Anthony Bernard and Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design Students

MILWAUKEE – Today, in celebration of Bronzeville Week, the Bronzeville Center for the Arts (BCA) unveiled a new community mural on the exterior of Gallery 507, its headquarters and gallery space at 507 W. North Ave. in Milwaukee’s historic Bronzeville District.

Kristen Hardy, Board Chair of the BCA said, “This mural stands as a shining example of what we can achieve through collaboration. It’s a testament to the power of partnership and the incredible things we can accomplish when we unite our diverse talents toward a common goal.”

Mayor Cavalier Johnson and Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs joined the BCA in unveiling the community mural, which celebrates the rich artistic history of Milwaukee’s Bronzeville.

“As we admire this mural, let’s celebrate not only the final product but also the collaborative spirit that made it possible,” said Johnson. “This is the kind of community-driven creativity that will continue to define and elevate Bronzeville’s artistic legacy.”

The 8 ft. by 24 ft. mural named Homage to Bronzeville, A Legacy in Paint was created in 2022 during Bronzeville Week. Local artist and MIAD Professor Brad Anthony Bernard led the mural project in collaboration with several art students. Homage to Bronzeville, A Legacy in Paint is installed for public viewing on the west-facing exterior wall of Gallery 507.

“This vibrant mural not only beautifies our streetscape but also serves as a cultural beacon, inviting visitors to explore Bronzeville’s rich history and dynamic present,” Coggs said.

The mural installation also marks the completion of construction of Gallery 507, the BCA’s first development in the heart of Bronzeville. Gallery 507 serves as the BCA’s planning headquarters as the organization develops a major new African American art museum in Bronzeville that will be a must-see destination for local residents and international tourists alike. The 3,500 square foot facility features an artists’ gallery, a maker-space, and a retail area, providing a vibrant space for creativity and community engagement. At this time, it is open to the public by appointment only.
