As summer comes to a close, I want to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who visited Above, Below, Within: Ciarra K. Walters at Gallery 507. It has been a privilege to share Walter’s powerful performance art practice, exploring familial memory, human nature, and the body as a site for artistic expression. We are deeply grateful to all who attended exhibitions, programs, and conversations throughout the run of the show. Your engagement helps bring these ideas to life and strengthens the role of art as a space for reflection and connection in the Halyard Park neighborhood.
This season has also reminded us of the importance of honoring the artists, histories, and cultural traditions that continue to shape Milwaukee’s creative landscape. As we gaze into the future, we are excited to open Building Bronzeville: Milwaukee’s Black Arts Movement on Thursday, September 24, co-curated by Chris Dingwall (Washington University-St. Louis).
This archival exhibition celebrates the artists, organizers, and educators whose work helped shape Milwaukee’s Black arts history. The enduring legacies of artists such as Evelyn Patricia Terry, Janiece E. Dicks, Gerald Duane Coleman, and William J. Christian continue to inspire new generations of creatives, with BCA proudly carrying this historic lineage forward.
We look forward to welcoming you into this important exhibition and continuing to explore the stories, creativity, and community that make Bronzeville such a vital part of our city’s past, present, and future. We thank Milwaukee County Historical Society, Milwaukee Public Library, and South Side Community Art Center Chicago for their partnership in bringing this project to life.
