A Message from BCA Executive Director, Ra Joy
From our earliest days, Black history has been American history. The vibrancy of Black culture has profoundly shaped American culture.
If you look across all artistic genres and fields of practice – from the visual and performing arts, to food, fashion, film, literature, music, and other forms of creative expression, Black artists have played a vital role in shaping our nation.
This is a pivotal moment in American history and a period of enormous consequence for our country. In 2026, America celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. As the nation reflects on its founding, it also wrestles with fundamental questions about what we choose to remember, who we choose to honor, and which voices are heard.
Amidst this backdrop, the Bronzeville Center for the Arts is building a movement to champion Black artists and celebrate their contributions to our world’s cultural tapestry through teaching, exhibitions, and community events. Powered by the beauty and richness of Black art, the BCA is on a mission to conceive, create, and sustain a world-class museum and arts center in the heart of one of Milwaukee’s most iconic districts.
During Black History Month and all year long, the Bronzeville Center for the Arts is proud to honor the achievements of artists of African descent. We have a full slate of programs, exhibitions, installations, and workshops planned for 2026, and we invite you to join us as we celebrate and advocate for Black art and culture.
